I was afforded at least an hour before I heard his name mentioned. After entering Shear Magic, I’d made a beeline to the stack of magazines, randomly choosing one as I buried my nose in the thrilling gossip of some celebrity and their inner turmoil. I feigned complete interest, avoiding eye contact with anyone until finally my own name was called.

“We still doing the mermaid look, Sedona?” Charlotte asked, peering at my reflection in the mirror I now sat before. Charlie, for short, was a genius when it came to hair, and the only person in Havenwood Falls I would trust with mine. She’d squealed with excitement when I showed her a photo I’d found online and vowed she wouldn’t let me leave the salon until my hair was perfect.

I didn’t know too much about Charlie other than the basics. Like me, she kept pretty much to herself unless it had something to do with work. I got the impression that life hadn’t been easy for her and knew should she choose to open up, she would. Today she had her fiery red hair pinned back with a set of fashion chopsticks stuck expertly into her loose bun. Tendrils of hair framed her round face, and a warm smile graced her features. Every time I came in, I made a mental note to somehow get to know her better, but life often got in the way.

“Absolutely!” I grinned as I tucked my feet on the chair’s rung. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen that photo. The purples, blues, and greens are gorgeous!”

She whipped the black plastic cape around me and began running her fingers through my hair. “Did you want a trim after to keep it healthy?” She held up a section, showing me the length she intended to cut. “Probably about half an inch would do it.”

Closing my eyes, I relaxed into the swivel seat. “I’m in your capable hands, Charlie. I trust you.”

A while later, I sat with my head under a dryer, the foil hiding the different dyes within its folds, making me look like I was trying to ward off a legion of space aliens. I’d started off reading another magazine, but it didn’t take long before my mind wandered to more enjoyable thoughts.

Like Micah.

His kisses.

The way his eyes widened ever so slightly—giving away how he truly felt whenever he saw me.

How amazing he was with Holly, even when he was being super protective.

He had so many incredibly sexy traits that dazzled me. He made the dashing heroes in my books pale by comparison. I was less interested in reading the pile of romance novels by my bedside and more into experiencing my very own real-life fairy tale.

Part of me warned that I was bordering on delusional—that there was no such thing as the perfect guy. Sooner or later, things would sour, and Micah would walk away. If it was too good to be true, it usually meant that some kind of flaw would surface and tarnish the sparkle.
